DIY Appliqued Onesies

My very first project after my sewing class wasn't actually sewing something. I had seen all over Etsy and on different blog posts appliqued onesies. I read some tutorials on it and decided to try it myself. Not only is it super easy, but really no sewing experience is required. As long as you know how to thread a needle and do a basic stitch by hand, you are set. It's an easy way to transform a plain white onesie or t-shirt and its fun too!! These make great gifts and are my go-to for new baby arrivals :)

1. To get started, all you need is a onesie, fusible web (I prefer the Heat'n Bond brand), an iron, scissors, needle and thread.

2. Next, find the shape for your applique. You can draw it by hand, browse the web or even trace from a favorite book. I like to first trace the applique on a heavy cardstock. That way I can use the applique again and again and it won't get bent or torn.

3. Set your iron to the cotton/linen setting or follow the directions on your fusible web. Cutting out a piece of fabric and a piece of web larger than your applique, iron them together with the sticky side of the web facing the wrong side of your fabric.

4. Now trace your applique shape on the paper side and cut your shape out. Gently peel the web off of the fabric. (Note: If you are a tracing a letter or number, trace it in reverse! Otherwise your number or letter will be facing the wrong way when you iron it on. Lesson learned one too many times!)

5.  Take your applique and place it right side up on your onesie. Iron it on.

6. Finally, to ensure the applique stays in place after washing, stitch it on. I still stitch my appliques by hand, which is time consuming, or you can stitch on the machine using a zig zag or other decorative stitch.

7. Voila! The perfect baby gift!!!

Here are a few of my creations:

Thanks for posting this! I'd always wanted to know how applique was done.

This is a terrific tutorial. And I'm guessing based upon the number of steps that you mentioned here that this can probably be done within one hour. That's not bad considering how unique the finished product will turn out.

Thanks again!
